The Osakis football team stuck with Browerville for two quarters last Friday night, but the Tigers rattled off 20 unanswered points in the second half to win 26-6 in Prairie Conference play.
Charlie Jennings provided some punch on the ground for the Silverstreaks as he rushed for 135 yards on 16 carries. A big chunk of those yards came on one play in the second quarter when he broke open an 80-yard touchdown run to tie the game up at six.
Head coach Pat Kalpin knew going into the game that Browerville would be a tough team to play from behind against. The Tigers took an early lead on a first-quarter touchdown before Jennings tied things up on the long touchdown run. That was the lone big play of the game for Osakis in the first half, though, as the Tigers were able to stay in the game and stick to their game plan in the second half, which is running the football.
“When we were down early in the game, I still felt that we were doing some really good things,” Kalpin said. “We had many chances in the first half, but weren’t able to come up with the big play, with the exception of Charlie Jennings’ 80-yard touchdown run at the end of the first half. I felt we didn’t take advantage of opportunities in the first half.”
Browerville took advantage of that in the second half and ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter to put some distance between the two teams. The Tigers then put the finishing touches on the game with a 50-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
“The second half was a different game,” Kalpin said. “Browerville was very effective with [its] running game. I felt like we were playing on our half of the field the whole third quarter. Our players worked hard and did their best. We just need to find ways to improve and put the ball in the end zone against good teams like Browerville.”
The loss dropped Osakis to 1-3 at the midpoint of the regular season as Browerville moved to 3-1 on the season. The Silverstreaks will try to get back on the winning track against United North Central this Friday when they welcome the Warriors to town.
UNC will come to Osakis fresh off its first victory of the season. The Warriors beat Pillager last Friday, 8-6, after losing their first three games to Browerville, Royalton and Upsala-Swanville Area.
