Cherry Street Books in Alexandria will welcome author Spike Carlsen to the store on Thursday, September 4 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Carlsen will be signing copies of his newly released book, A Splintered History of Wood: Belt Sander Races, Blind Woodworkers and Baseball Bats.

The book is described as "a biography of nature's greatest gift and how it has shaped human history." Carlsen traveled thousands of miles and interviewed hundreds of wood users and enthusiasts to carve out a comprehensive and dynamic history of wood's global impact and its personal significance to people in all walks of life.

Of special interest to people in central Minnesota, the book includes a chapter about the MaxBat Company in Brooten.

Carlsen is the executive editor of Family Handyman Magazine, the project editor for Backyard Living Magazine and author of the Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual. His home is in Stillwater.
