Minnesota Department of Revenue offers new online tool for taxpayers

Because sales tax can vary depending on what and where an item is purchased, the Minnesota Department of Revenue is providing an easy way to accurately determine how much sales tax is applied.

Responding to taxpayers wanting to know how much sales tax they’re paying, the department developed an online calculator that shows the state and local general sales and use tax rates on sales made in Minnesota. Taxpayers can figure out how much sales tax is charged in a specific area by entering a zip code.

The calculator does not include special local taxes such as Minneapolis lodging, St. Cloud liquor and food tax and St. Paul lodging taxes. Taxpayers will need to add the special local tax rate to the general sales and use tax rate, as identified by the rate calculator, if any special local taxes apply.

In order to accurately calculate the sales tax, a nine-digit zip code must be entered. Some zip codes are not completely within a taxing jurisdiction, so entering only the five digit code may result in an incorrect tax amount. A nine-digit zip code locator is included on the Web page.

To access the calculator go to the Department’s Web site, www.taxes.state.mn.us:

1. Click on “Sales and Use Tax.”

2. Click on “Sales Tax Rate Calculator.”
