The Clarissa Flyers and Carlos Cougars will face off one more time this season to decide the Resorters East Playoff Championship.
The Flyers beat Urbank 4-2 on Saturday night to set up another game with the top two teams in the Resorters East.
Carlos and Clarissa had met three times this year prior to Sunday’s game. The Cougars had taken two of those contests, including a tight win in the playoffs last weekend.
This time it was the Flyers who came out on top in a close contest as Brian Hinzmann hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to drive in Boo Boo Johnson with the winning run. The win sets up a winner takes all game this Sunday in Carlos for the Resorters East Championship.
The two teams went back and forth all game with four ties. Clarissa took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. That 6-5 score held until the ninth when Carlos was able to push across the tying run.
Clarissa’s Jared Morrill led all hitters at the plate with a 5-for-5 day. He scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run on the day. Kurtis Kuhn also had a great game with three hits and a walk, while scoring three runs.
Seth Noland worked the first five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Scott Lieser picked up the win in relief by limiting Carlos to one run in four innings. Lieser struck out five.
It took another late-game rally for the Flyers to pick up a win over Urbank on Saturday night.
The Bombers led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before Clarissa bunched together three singles and two walks to take the lead for good.
Hinzmann once again drove home the go-ahead run with a single to left field, scoring James Olson. Morrill scored the tying run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and Kuhn gave the Flyers an insurance run with a single later in the eighth.
Hinzmann gave his team the lead in the eighth and he secured the victory for them in the ninth by pitching a perfect inning of relief. He picked up the win after pitching the eighth and the ninth, only giving up one run.
Cuchna did not factor in the decision, but he kept his team in the game through seven innings. He held the Bombers to one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out three. Morrill, Mike and Brian Hinzmann led the offense with two hits apiece. Mike Hinzmann scored twice for the Flyers.
The two wins for Clarissa sets up what will be the fifth contest of the season between Carlos and the Flyers. First pitch is set for this Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. in Carlos.
