The Osakis Babe Ruth Baseball team upset No. 2 seeded Albany last Friday to secure a spot in the district tournament for the second consecutive summer.
Osakis finished the regular season 6-8 and went into the playoffs as the No. 5 seed out of six teams. Good pitching usually gets out good hitting in baseball and that was the case in the playoffs as Devin Waldvogel threw two gems to advance his team in the playoffs.
Waldvogel allowed just one run against Albany, while scattering seven hits and striking out two to secure a 3-1 lead. The game was tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Waldvogel helped his own cause by leading off the inning with a single. Kylar Zimmel advanced him into scoring position before Joe Roggenbuck got a big run-scoring basehit to drive in the go-ahead run.
Ben Anderson added an insurance run later in the inning with an RBI-single.
Osakis also needed some late game heroics to take its first tournament game against Browerville last Tuesday. With the game tied 2-2 after seven innings, Osakis bunched together five runs in the top of the eighth to secure a road victory.
Waldvogel was once again the story on the mound. He went all eight innings and did not allow an earned run on three hits. He struck out 10 on the day.
Osakis advanced to the semifinals with the win over Browerville to take on No. 1 seeded Melrose. Melrose showed why it was the No. 1 seed as they took care of business with a 10-0 win.
Osakis’ ability to bounce right back against Albany meant the difference between going home and living to play another day at the district tournament.
Districts take place July 25-27 in Avon and Richmond.
