If you’re thinking of driving – or boating – across the Lake Carlos/L’Homme Dieu channel on Monday, you’d better change your plans.

The channel is being dredged, weather permitting.

No through-traffic will be allowed on the portion of County Road 42 while the work is taking place and the channel will be temporarily closed.

Douglas County hopes to complete the job in one day.

The channel hasn’t been dredged since 1998. The buildup of mud and sand has made it difficult at times for bigger boats to maneuver between the two lakes.

“The water is up from last fall [so] it’s not a challenge or problem navigating it right now,” noted County Engineer Dave Robley. “We’re removing material so if there is a dry spell this fall there won’t be a problem.”

Robley said the same kind of operation as the one 10 years ago is planned. He advises people to avoid the channel and roadway while the work is under way.

The county’s permit allows for up to 150 cubic yards to be removed. The mud and sand will be removed on each side of the bridge as well as material under the bridge.

When complete, the effort will provide another foot and a half of depth on bottom, Robley said.
