Novotny, Rykes win Osakis walleye tournament

Kurt Novotny and Dale Ryks of Willmar pulled in 30.30 pounds of fish during the 28th annual Osakis Lions Walleye Tournament to take top honors in the June 14-15 competition on Lake Osakis.

Osakis’ Greg Sadlemyer, along with his teammate Rodd Gustafson of Long Prairie, finished seventh overall in the tournament, catching 19.80 pounds of fish.

Jeff Larson and Ryan Larson, also of Osakis, finished 11th with 18.35 pounds of fish.

Osakis’ Mike Sorenson, with teammate Kyle Spychalla of Browerville, caught 18 pounds of fish to finish 12th, while Snook Barrett, also of Osakis, and his teammate Glenn Miller of St. Joseph, caught 14 pounds of fish to finish tied for 18th.

The largest walleye caught on day one was 6.25 pounds and was pulled in by the team of Mitch Elke and Dave Bollman of Dassel and Granite Falls.

Day two’s largest walleye came in at 5.9 pounds and was caught by Novotny and Ryks.

The team of Jerry Wojtkiewicz and Al Marcyes of Osakis pulled in the largest northern of the tournament, which weighed in at 7.1 pounds.

In all, 296 walleyes weighing 593 pounds were caught, with 157 (315 pounds) caught on day one and 139 (278 pounds) caught on day two.

A total of 259 walleyes were released back into Lake Osakis.

The 37 fish that did not survive were filleted and donated to Commuity Memorial Nursing home for a fish fry for the residents.
