Richard Louis Chevalier was born May 31, 1918, in Willmar, the son of Louis G. and Ervila (Goulet) Chevalier. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Clontarf. He grew up on a farm in Pope County and attended country school through the eighth grade. He went on to work in the CC Camp at age 18 during World War II.
On May 23, 1946, Richard was united in marriage to Genevieve Bouta at St. Malachy's in Clontarf by Father King. They were blessed with three children. Together, Richard and Genevieve were able to share in 62 years of marriage.
Richard farmed his entire life on a farm in Hoff Township of Pope County with his brother Vernon until his retirement in 1980. They moved off the farm in 1999, and moved to Benson. They were presently living at Homestead Place in Murdock. Richard was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church in Clontarf and the Knights of Columbus. Among the things he enjoyed were machining, raising chickens, reading, playing cards and dancing. After retirement, he enjoyed going on bus tours. Richard was called from this life on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 at Homestead Place at Murdock. He attained the age of 90 years, 4 months and 6 days.
Richard is survived by his wife Genevieve of Murdock, three children: Carol (Jerry) VerSteeg of Hancock, Coleen Johnson of Cosmos, and Marilyn (and special friend Lowell Marcus of Prinsburg) Thole of Willmar; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; siblings: Vernon (Donna) Chevalier of Benson, and Ardella Geyer of Rochester; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Louis and Ervila; great-granddaughter, Katelyn; a sister Arlene Bly; and a brother, Gordon Chevalier, sons-in-law, Dale Emmert and Daniel Thole.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson, with Father John Pearson officiating. Burial will be in St. Malachy Cemetery in Clontarff. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.
