Letter - State grant program needs upgrading

Many of our Minnesota students are intent on obtaining a degree and moving forward into a better or more desirable career. Often, there are situations in life that make being a full-time student nearly impossible.

To the editor:

Many of our Minnesota students are intent on obtaining a degree and moving forward into a better or more desirable career. Often, there are situations in life that make being a full-time student nearly impossible, such as family, children, bills and money, or the lack thereof. That is why I would appreciate your support in expanding financial aid programs for our part-time, working students.

Although I myself was fortunate enough to find a program that created the opportunity for me to go to school full-time after losing my job of 12-plus years, not everyone is as fortunate.

Many of the full-time students that benefited from a Minnesota State Grant Program and who worked in the 1980s, are returning to school now, 25 and 30 years later, and they are finding a state grant program that leaves a lot to be desired.

The Minnesota State Grant Program unfortunately doesn’t reflect the reality that more than half of Minnesota’s public, two-year college students go to school part time. That is why we need to increase equity in the Minnesota State Grant program and fully prorate the amount that students receive in aid.
