Donald Lane Westad departed this world much too young at age 65 on March 9, 2013 of complications following surgery.
Don grew up on a dairy farm near Parkers Prairie. After graduating from Parkers Prairie High School and Alexandria Technical College, Don served in the U.S. Army in Germany (1968 -1970).
Don was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and golf. He loved to travel and one of his highlights was an African safari. Don was endowed with a deep work ethic. He worked more than 30 years for Sharp Construction, and helped countless friends with their building projects.
Always with a ready smile and a helping hand, Don touched so many lives. He lived in Coon Rapids more than 40 years and spent many happy days on his hobby farm in Otter Tail County. Proud of his Norwegian heritage, we can only say “uff da, Donnie, uff da.” You will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Donna (Benzinger); 95-year-old mother, Bernice; brothers. Gary (Geri), Dean (Cheri), Mark; and cherished nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; and sister, Carole.
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 14 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. Marilee Bergerson officiating. Interment was at Kinkead Cemetery. Casket bearers were Andrew Benzinger, Nicole Benzinger, Alex Lanigan, Jamie Lanigan, Justin Phillips, Jason Westad and Justin Westad.
