The Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) preliminary contest winners will advance to state competition on March 16-17 at Ferguson Hall, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
The following students from the Alexandria area were selected as preliminary winners and will compete as state finalists:
Pre-primary – Kristy Knutson, Ahlea Mouser.
Primary – Sophia Anderson, Gabriella Staples.
Junior A – Autumn Grasswick, Declan Johnson, Megan Rinicker, Brita Sonmor.
Junior B – Kara Anderson, Winston Anderson, Eleanor Koranda, Lauren Landowski, Hunter Mickelsen, Kate Schmidt.
Intermediate A – Evan Aanerud, Emily Mickelsen, Gabi Ross.
Intermediate B – Sam Carlson, Cassandra Eerdmans, Laura Orpen.
Senior A – Bethany Hellem, Yayvin Viratyosin.
The MMTA west district preliminaries were held January 26 at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria.
More than 4,000 students played statewide at preliminaries. Out of these, approximately 1,500 students are advancing to state competition.
The purpose of the competition is to motivate students to work toward musical excellence, challenge the student’s playing level, provide a performance opportunity and learn from a graded list.
Theory exams are required at the Intermediate A level and above.
The preliminary winners are students of Alexandria Area Music Teachers Association teachers Marcia Benson, Charis Bjorklund, Ann DuHamel, Annette Helder, Roxie Klemetson, Wendy Lindlief and Julia Whynott.
