Battle of the Blades
The Alexandria Figure Skating Club will host its 21st annual Battle of the Blades competition Saturday, March 16, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Runestone Community Center.

Academic
The Cardinal wrestling team received All-State Academic silver honors for having a team grade point average of 3.0-3.9.
The Minnewaska Area and West Central Area wrestling teams also received the silver award, which is given by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association (MWCA).
Strese named
Dragon MVP
Brandon-Evansville graduate and junior at MSU-Moorhead Megan Strese was named the Dragon women’s basketball team’s most valuable player.
Strese, who was also selected to the All-NSIC first team, led the Dragons in scoring with 14.4 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game.
She received the Windex award and the For the Love of the Game award.
Bredy named Central Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year
West Central Area graduate Derek Bredy was named the Central Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s high point scorer award for the third straight year.
His performance in the NSIC championships helped MSU-Moorhead finish second as a team.
Bredy broke the meet record in the 60 meters and captured the title in the long jump. He was second in the 200 meters and third in the triple jump.
He was also part of the second place 4x400-meter relay team.
In his career, Bredy has won 13 conference championships and now enters the NCAA Indoor Championships as the No. 1 seed in the 200 meters with a converted time of 21.06.
Tennis mixer set
The Alexandria Area Tennis Association is sponsoring an adult tennis mixer Sunday, March 17 from 5-8 p.m. at Arrowwood Resort indoor courts.
All interested tennis players are invited to come and bring a friend. Players of all skill levels are welcome.
Cost is $6. Membership forms and information will be available.
Eagles horseshoe
meeting
The Eagles Horseshoe League will hold its first meeting Monday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs of the Eagles Club in Alexandria at 3063 Highway 29 North.
Both men and women are welcome.
Clean-up is set for April 15 at 6 p.m. with the start of league play tentatively set for April 22 at 6:30 p.m. depending on weather.

Go-Kart spaghetti fundraiser
The Runestone Raceway Go-Kart Association is holding a spaghetti supper fundraiser Friday, April 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the Elks Club in Alexandria.
Cost is $5 in advance and $6 at the door.
Go-Karts will be on display April 12-14 at the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria.
Osakis sports awards ceremony
The Osakis winter sports awards ceremony will be held Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m. in the Osakis High School auditorium.
Junior Golf Academy registration
There will be a Junior Golf Academy for boys and girls in grades 6-8 from 3:45-5:15 p.m. April 15 through May 24 sponsored by Scott Dirck’s Golf Academy and Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, at the Geneva Golf Club.

YMCA classes
The Alexandria Area YMCA is offering winter youth baseball and softball activities including an indoor hitting league beginning on March 21 for youth in grades 3-9.

Icebreaker at Viking
The 2013 Central Minnesota Icebreaker scheduled for April 25-27 at the Viking Speedway will be changing formats.
Two complete WISSOTA national points shows will be held for five divisions to give drivers a jump on the national points chase.
An open practice session will be held Thursday, April 25 from 6-9 p.m. and the grandstands will be open for fans free of charge.
Racing will begin at 6 p.m. Friday night with heats, b-mains and features for all five divisions. On Saturday, racing begins at 3 p.m. with the same schedule of races.
Basketball programs raise money for
oncology department
The Alexandria girls’ and boys’ basketball programs raised more than $1,000 for the local oncology unit at the Douglas County Hospital through the “Take Flight for the Fight” event February 9.
Boys’ swim team
raises money for
Special Olympics
The Alexandria boys’ swimming and diving team raised $100 for Special Olympics when they sponsored a Chuck-A-Duck contest at their final home meet against St. Cloud Apollo.

The Alexandria Area Soccer Association Summer Soccer U10 registration deadline is April 1.

Lacrosse clinic
Lakes Area Recreation is holding an introductory lacrosse clinic on Saturday, April 6 at the Runestone Community Center.
The clinic will be led by Justin Gervais, coach at Mahtomedi High School and director of Minnesota Lacrosse Skills Clinics, LLC, and Kevin Whiteis, head coach at Robbinsdale-Cooper High School and defensive coordinator for Team Minnesota U13.

There will be a cage fighting event at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen March 15, featuring two pro fights – Brent Puffe, Bemidji, vs. Chad Vaundrin, Wisconsin and Bruce Nelson, Ada vs. William Brownotter, South Dakota.
Fighters from Alexandria, Brainerd, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Bemidji, Fosston and Wisconsin will also be on the card.

WCA elementary

West Central Area will host an elementary basketball tournament on Saturday, March 23 for boys and girls in grades 4-6.
