'Travel' the world with Arm Chair Adventures

Alexandria Community Education will offer an Arm Chair Adventure series, allowing people to “travel” to places like Turkey, Mauritania, Guatemala and Panama.
On Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at Discovery Middle School (DMS) in Alexandria, Steve and Diane Henry will share their experiences of transcontinental Turkey. They traveled from Istanbul to the capital city of Ankara, saw the fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, went to the mountainous city of Konya, traveled the Mediterranean coast and visited the ancient Greek cities of Aphrodisias and Ephesus.
On Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at DMS, venture to Africa, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Bocar and Alison Kane will explore the diverse people, geography and customs. They’ll share experiences in travels to Bocar’s homeland in the dunes of the Sahara Desert.
The third destination, Central America, will be offered three times from March 25-28 at various locations during Holy Week. Call (320) 762-3310, extension 4270 for details.
Deb Trumm will talk about Guatemala. It is a treasure trove of indigenous culture, Mayan sites, mountain scenery, tropical forests, active volcanoes and colonial cities. Trumm will share about Antigua for the Holy Week celebrations.
The final travelogue is Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at DMS.
Dorothy Lund Nelson will share her experiences of traveling to Panama, sharing photos and stories about the people, the coffee plantation she stayed at in the mountains, the birds in the jungle and the neighboring tropical islands.
