Alexandria junior Brandon Bistodeau was named the Central Lakes Conference performer of the week in boys’ basketball after scoring 32 points and dishing out eight assists in two games for the Cardinals.
Hochsprung, Johnnies earn first playoff win
Former Alexandrian Justin Hochsprung and the St. John’s University men’s hockey team won their first MIAC playoff championship since 2003, and the first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament since 2005 with a 3-2 win over Gustavus Adolphus last Saturday.
Hochsprung, who assisted on the Johnnies’ first goal and netted the game-winner, earned the junior forward MIAC Men’s Hockey Athlete of the Week honors.
He currently leads the team with a plus/minus rating of +17 and is second with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists).
The Johnnies opened NCAA Division III play Wednesday at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Strese named to
All-NSIC team
Minnesota State University-Moorhead junior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team in women’s basketball.
Strese, from Evansville, was second in the league in rebounding (10) and 10th in scoring (14.8). She averaged 14.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game and shot 78.1 percent from the free throw line.
She also had 28 assists and 28 steals.
YMCA classes
The Alexandria Area YMCA is holding a youth indoor pitching clinic on Sunday, March 10, at 6 p.m. for youth in grades 3-6 and includes four sessions to focus on the fundamentals of pitching.

Deer Camp banquet March 16
The Minnesota Lakes Deer Camp, including a social hour and banquet sponsored by Whitetails Unlimited, will be held at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria Saturday, March 16.
Social hour and banquet begin at 5 p.m. The event will feature raffles, auction and door prizes.

Icebreaker at Viking
The 2013 Central Minnesota Icebreaker scheduled for April 25-27 at the Viking Speedway will be changing formats.
Two complete WISSOTA national points shows will be held for five divisions to give drivers a jump on the national points chase.
An open practice session will be held Thursday, April 25 from 6-9 p.m. and the grandstands will be open for fans free of charge.
Racing will begin at 6 p.m. Friday night with heats, b-mains and features for all five divisions. On Saturday, racing begins at 3 p.m. with the same schedule of races.
Basketball programs raise money for
oncology department
The Alexandria girls’ and boys’ basketball programs raised more than $1,000 for the local oncology unit at the Douglas County Hospital through the “Take Flight for the Fight” event February 9.
Soccer Association deadlines approaching
The Alexandria Area Soccer Association Summer Soccer U10 registration deadline is April 1.

Lacrosse clinic
Lakes Area Recreation is holding an introductory lacrosse clinic on Saturday, April 6 at the Runestone Community Center.
The clinic will be led by Justin Gervais, coach at Mahtomedi High School and director of Minnesota Lacrosse Skills Clinics, LLC, and Kevin Whiteis, head coach at Robbinsdale-Cooper High School and defensive coordinator for Team Minnesota U13.

The Aberdeen Family YMCA is holding its 42nd annual boys’ basketball tournament April 5-6 for grades 3-9, with a 9th grade girls division as well.
There are different competitive levels for each grade.

at Shooting Star in Mahnomen
There will be a cage fighting event at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen March 15, featuring two pro fights – Brent Puffe, Bemidji, vs. Chad Vaundrin, Wisconsin and Bruce Nelson, Ada vs. William Brownotter, South Dakota.
Fighters from Alexandria, Brainerd, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Bemidji, Fosston and Wisconsin will also be on the card.
Action begins at 8 p.m.
WCA elementary
basketball tournament
West Central Area will host an elementary basketball tournament on Saturday, March 23 for boys and girls in grades 4-6.
Cost is $100 per team.
