Alexandria boys’ basketball players could have hung their heads after a 56-54 loss to Brainerd dropped this team to 5-11 on February 8. Instead, the Cardinals have done just the opposite and were rewarded for that with a home playoff game.
Alexandria finished off its regular season by winning seven of its last eight games to end up 12-12. The Cardinals culminated that with a dominating 76-61 win over a 14-12 Rocori team last Friday night in a game that saw Alexandria shoot 60 percent from the field (28-46) and 55 percent from three (10-18).
John Vogeler had a lot to do with that as the junior guard went off for 28 points. It was one of those nights when Vogeler got hot behind the arc. He finished 8-of-12 from three in helping his team head into last night’s Section 8AAA opener with a lot of confidence.
Senior forward Logan Doyle added a night to remember for multiple reasons. He set the single-season rebounding record earlier this year and now has the career record all to himself after grabbing 14 boards against the Spartans and putting in 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
Doyle was six rebounds short of the record number of 620 heading into Friday night. He now has 628 total boards in his career, including 336 this year, an average of 14 per game.
Another good sign for this team was the continued solid play of junior guard Brandon Bistodeau. He finished in double figures during the final three regular-season games. He saved his best for last, scoring 19 against Rocori on 6-of-6 shooting from the field and a 7-of-8 night from the free throw line.
Alexandria’s recent run earned it the No. 2 seed in the South 8AAA subsection. The Cardinals were scheduled to host Little Falls last night, Tuesday. The winner of that game will play at Minnesota State University-Moorhead this Saturday against either Fergus Falls or Detroit Lakes. Tip for that game is set for 7:30 p.m.
