Mary Ann Black, 92

Mary Ann Black, 92, passed away peacefully February 26, 2013.

Mary Ann was born in Belle River Township on August 5, 1920 to John and Abby Patrick. She grew up on a farm in Belle River and attended school in Belle River Township. As a young woman, she worked at Miller’s Inn and Hillside Club in Alexandria.

On June 13, 1944, she was united in marriage to Percy Black in Belle River. The couple called several places home and worked many jobs together. As a young couple, they were part of a band called the 4 Stars and played at many barn dances. Mary Ann was the drummer. They also hung wallpaper and farmed for a living.

In 1958, they moved from the Black family farm to a new home in Carlos, where they started Black’s Plumbing and Heating.

Mary Ann always had a huge garden and enjoyed sewing, hunting and fishing. Many fish fries were held at the Black residence in Carlos for relatives and friends visiting from all over the country. She had a passion for flowers and visiting. She absorbed all of the details of a visit and was able to apply stories and events to her life. She was a loving mother, grandma and great-grandma who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

After living at her home in Carlos for 52 years, Mary Ann moved on to another fresh start in October of 2011 when she moved to Grand Arbor in Alexandria. There she started another adventure in life where new friends and all the activities kept her so busy she had to make time to rest.

Mary Ann is survived by her son, Darrell (Gail) Black of Apple Valley; daughter, Linda (Dick) Wetterling of Kensington; six grandchildren, Denise (Jay) Petsche, Craig (Denaya) Black, Curt Black, Jennifer (Kyle) Kangas, Melissa Wetterling and Michael (Heidi) Wetterling; four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Kaitlyn Petsche, and Maggie and Madalyn Kangas; brother, Richard Patrick; sister, Mildred (Jack) Sigfrid; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Abby; husband, Percy; and nine brothers and sisters.

A Mass was held for Mary Ann on Saturday, March 2 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Fr. Dave Petron officiating. Musician was Sami Steidl, whose violin music was so enjoyed by Mary Ann. Interment was at St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Craig Black, Curt Black and Michael Wetterling. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
