Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville drops three

The Brandon-Evansville boys had a rough back-to-back stretch as they had their worst loss of the season to Battle Lake Friday after falling to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Thursday.
The Battlers (16-5, 10-2 LEC) came into the night having lost to Brandon-Evansville (8-15, 6-6 LEC) on the road earlier this season. They seemed to remember that as they got revenge with a 66-16 win on their home court.
“Let’s put it where this belongs, that’s on me,” head coach John Holsten said. “We didn’t have our kids ready to play. For whatever reason, we just weren’t ready to go. I still love them. I still believe in them. We got a lot of work to do and we just need to recover from this.”
The Chargers trailed 45-12 at the break and were held to just four points in the second half. John Haseman was the only player in double figures for Brandon-Evansville. He had 11 as the Chargers shot 1-of-13 from three and just 7-of-29 overall.
“I don’t want to take anything away from [Battle Lake],” Holsten said. “They were terrific. Absolutely terrific.”
The Chargers found out how tough it can be without Haseman on the floor for much of the night in a 64-43 loss to CGB. He picked up his third foul two-thirds of the way through the first half and had to sit the rest of the way. The Wolverines responded by closing the half on a 15-3 run to take control of the game.
“It wasn’t that we weren’t trying,” Holsten said. “I think a lot of guys tried to make plays. It’s just, we didn’t rely on one another at times. It’s no secret that John is our go-to guy, and if he isn’t playing, not just one guy, but everyone together has to step up. It sure wasn’t for a lack of effort. Our guys really tried, and I’m proud of them for that.”
Haseman finished with a team-high 19 points. Billie Juul added a career-high 15, while Patrick Schaffer chipped in 12 points and five assists.
The two losses were the Chargers’ eighth in their last 10 games. They have also suffered a bunch of injuries as the season has gone on. Sophomore guard James Huisman is out for the season after re-aggravating an thumb injury and Mitch Anderson is also out for the year with an ACL tear that he suffered during the Rothsay game on February 8.
The Brandon-Evansville boys bounced back from a 50-point loss to Battle Lake last week with a nice effort that came up just short in a 49-48 loss to Henning on Tuesday night.
The Chargers had a one-point lead in the closing seconds when the Hornets’ Collin Dague hit a shot at the buzzer to win it for his team. Dague worked his way into the lane and muscled up a shot off the backboard and in to move his team to 20-4 overall.
“They made a couple more plays than we did down the stretch,” Brandon-Evansville head coach John Holsten said.
The Chargers fought back from a 41-35 deficit in the second half to take a lead late. John Haseman had another good game with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead the way. Blake Satterlie and Billie Juul each had nine points, while Skyler Quinn finished with eight.
“The first thing that we discussed after the game was we were proud of them for the way they came back after a very poor outing at Battle Lake,” Holsten said. “It was a tough loss. It was senior night and all that kind of stuff. We wanted to get that one.”
The Chargers were named the ninth seed in the Section 6A Tournament and will open up at eighth-seeded Underwood on Monday with a 7 p.m. tip.
The Chargers finish off the regular season with a game at Hancock tonight, Friday.
