Area students advance to state Mathcounts event
Students from area schools will compete in the Mathcounts State Championship March 15-16. There will be 126 students from 44 schools vying for the state title at the Crown Plaza Conference Center in Plymouth.
Students from area schools will compete in the Mathcounts State Championship March 15-16. There will be 126 students from 44 schools vying for the state title at the Crown Plaza Conference Center in Plymouth.
The top four scorers will represent Minnesota in the National Mathcounts Finals in Washington, D.C., in May. The students won the right to participate in the state meet by winning regional competitions in February.
The team from Discovery Middle School in Alexandria placed second in the Height of Land meet February 13 and will compete for the state title. The team consists of Wil Kopp, Laura Timm, Camile Johnson, Christian Schlosser and Coach Denise Murken.
Alexsander Pikkaraine, Brandon-Evansville High School, coached by Jennifer Froemming, will also attend for being among top individual scorers at the regional meet.
Mathcounts is a national program that promotes math achievement by 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. In Minnesota, the program is coordinated by volunteer members of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers.
Results will be posted March 16 after 2 p.m. on mathcounts.org.
