Letter - March is Food Shelf Month

To the editor:

The March campaign for Minnesota food shelves is coming soon.

The Outreach Food Shelf in Alexandria is helping people with feeding themselves. In 2012, we served 4,027 families with 310 new families for the year. We had a total of 609,950 pounds of food donated for 2012.

Douglas County is a very generous county, which supports our local food shelf. We are grateful for any and all donations. Thank you.

During the month of March, we can purchase more food for the money we receive than during any other month of the year.

The facts from a Gallup poll state that one in eight Minnesotans did not have enough money for food during the first part of 2012. Hunger Solutions Minnesota reports that visits to food shelves have increased 164 percent over the last decade.

Your help is needed so we can continue to serve the hungry in Douglas County.
