Three wrestlers will represent the Silverstreaks at the State Class A tournament this weekend as Brendon Coyer, Trenton Coyer and Garret Scherr will be heading to the Xcel Energy Center after finishing in the top two at the Section 5A individual tournament in Long Prairie Saturday.
“I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results from our section tournament,” said head coach Joey Andreasen. “Brendon, Trenton and Garret all qualified in weight classes that were very difficult. I believe all three have a great chance at placing down at the state meet. We also had Austin Rollag and Ryan Engfer come very close to qualifying as well with third place finishes.”
Trenton Coyer and Scherr are making their second straight appearance, while Brendon Coyer will make his first appearance.
Brendon, ranked No. 2 at his weight class in the final State Class A polls, wrestled at 106 pounds and captured the title at that weight as he opened competition with a pin, then earned a decision in the semifinals before decisioning No. 9 ranked Joey Tensen of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 6-2 for the championship.
In the state opener, Brendon, a freshman with a 34-3 record, will take on another freshman in Tyler Bare of Aitkin, who sports a 27-12 record. If he wins, he would face either freshman Jared Clawiter of Kenyon-Wanamingo (30-12) or No. 9 ranked senior Brady Zitzman of BOLD (30-9).
Trenton Coyer, a sophomore with a 32-3 mark, finished second at 113 pounds Saturday to advance to the state tournament. He opened section competition with a pin, then used a 9-3 decision to reach the finals.
There he faced No. 2 ranked Blane Tschida of Kimball, falling 6-1.
In his state opener, Trenton faces sophomore Joe Fischenich of Windom/Mountain Lake (31-10). If he wins, would face No. 10 ranked sophomore Byron Byer of Frazee (30-12) or Joel Gadient, freshman from Goodhue (30-11)
Scherr, a senior ranked No. 5 in the final polls with a 28-6 record, captured a title at 220 pounds, opened section action with a pin, then used a 7-3 decision of No. 7 ranked Austin Schiefelbein of Kimball to advance to the championship match where he fell to No. 3 ranked Lucas Damm of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 5-3.
Schiefelbein was last year’s section champion at 195 pounds.
Scherr’s first state opponent will be sophomore Nick Meixell of Lake Crystall-Wellcome Memorial (30-8). If he wins, he’d face junior Chase Norton of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (30-6), or senior Logan Sonnek of United South Central (27-9).
The wrestlers begin their Class A individual competition at 1 p.m. on Friday, with action continuing at 7 p.m. that night and beginning again at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The final medal matches begin at 5 p.m. with the championships starting at 7:30 p.m.
Osakis also had two wrestlers finish third in Ryan Engfer at 120 pounds and Austin Rollag at 152 pounds.
Nils Hagen, 170 pounds, and Peter Hagen, 285 pounds, were fifth, while Colton Waldvogel, 126 pounds, and Mitch Sunder, 195 pounds, were sixth.
Waldvogel’s wins on Saturday helped him break a school record for the most wins by a 7th grader at 17. The previous mark was 16.
“He [Waldvogel] suffered a high ankle sprain in late January,” said Andreasen, “and came back so he could break the record, which he did on Saturday.
