Carlson receives Hobey Baker award

Alexandria girls’ hockey player Anna Carlsen was selected as a recipient of the Minnesota Hobey Baker High School Character Award.

The award is given to recognize character, commitment, teamwork, persistence, selflessness, academic excellence and sportsmanship.

The award is given by the Hobey Baker Foundation.

Soccer Association deadlines approaching

The Alexandria Area Soccer Association Summer Soccer deadline is fast approaching.  Register online, by mail or in person at the UPS Store by March 1.

After March 1, only open roster positions will be filled.

The U10 registration deadline is April 1.

Cage fighting event

at Shooting Star in

Mahnomen

There will be a cage fighting event at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen March 15, featuring two pro fights – Brent Puffe, Bemidji, vs. Chad Vaundrin, Wisconsin and Bruce Nelson, Ada vs. William Brownotter, South Dakota.

Fighters from Alexandria, Brainerd, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Bemidji, Fosston and Wisconsin will also be on the card.

Action begins at 8 p.m.

Schneider qualifies

for regional

Alexandria freshman Jack Schneider finished third at the U.S. Ski Association Central (Midwest) Division U16 Alpine championships in Marquette, Michigan February 19-23.

Schneider competed in the slalom, giant slalom and downhill events against 75 competitors from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio.

His finish qualifies him to compete in the USSA Rocky-Central Regional U16 Junior championships in Vail-Beaver Creek, Colorado March 3-9.

Deitz in All-Star

Alexandria’s Ted Deitz has been selected to play in the Minnesota High School All-Star football game June 29 at St. Cloud State University’s Husky Stadium.

Runestone Spiel

March 1-3

The 7th annual authentic Runestone Spiel will be held at the Runestone Communty Center Friday-Sunday, March 1-3.

There is a 16 team limit with four games guaranteed. Cost is $160 per team.

There will also be a 2+2 Fun Spiel on Saturday, March 2 for new/novice curlers.

Players may sign up individually and will be placed on a team.

Cost is $20 per person and there is an eight-team limit.

Youth basketball night rescheduled

The Alexandria Youth Basketball Night has been rescheduled for Friday, March 1 during the Cardinal boys’ basketball game against Rocori at 7:30 p.m.

All youth basketball players wearing their youth basketball T-shirt or jersey will receive free admission to the game.

All players will also receive a team photo and varsity players will be signing autographs after the game. Cookie/coffee social will also follow the game in the hallway outside the gym.

West Central Area will host an elementary basketball tournament on Saturday, March 23 for boys and girls in grades 4-6.

Cost is $100 per team.

LAR 35-older open gym

Lakes Area Recreation holds open gym on Sundays for 35-older from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym, running to the middle of April.

Cost is $3 for adults.

YMCA classes

The Alexandria Area YMCA is offering beginning and advanced gymnastics classes beginning February 26 and running through April 9 for boys and girls ages 18 months and up.

Participants can register online by visiting www.alexandriaymca.com or by calling (320) 834-9622.

The YMCA is also offering winter youth baseball and softball activities including an indoor hitting league beginning on March 17 for youth in grades 3-9. Teams of four will compete against each other.

There is a youth indoor pitching clinic on Sunday, March 3, at 6 p.m. for youth in grades 3-6 and includes four sessions to focus on the fundamentals of pitching.

Batting cages are open Fridays and Sundays, with Saturday batting cage times available beginning February 23.

There are baseball gym rentals available as well.

Montevideo youth basketball tournament

There will be a youth basketball tournament in Montevideo for boys and girls in grades 5-7 on Saturday, March 23.

Entry deadline is March 8.
