Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville defeats Hillcrest

By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press

The Brandon-Evansville boys broke out of a bit of a funk by picking up a nice win over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy last Friday night.

The Comets came into the night winners of five straight games. They were 8-3 in the Little Eight Conference and had already beaten Brandon-Evansville by 20 points on January 15. The Chargers made sure that didn’t happen again as they erased a halftime deficit to win 54-47.

“They’ve been playing as well as anyone in the conference,” head coach John Holsten said of the Comets. “We had lost a lot of close games. This was a win by playing with good poise down the stretch. We hadn’t done that in a while.”

The Chargers (8-13, 6-5 LEC) trailed 28-19 at the half before outscoring Hillcrest (9-8, 8-4 LEC) 35-19 the rest of the way. Blake Satterlie hit four threes in the game for all 12 of his points. The last of those triples gave his team its first lead of the night at 46-45.

John Haseman led the Chargers with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Patrick Schaffer added 18 points, four rebounds and four assists, as well.

Brandon-Evansville also had a season-low eight turnovers in the game, including just three in the second half. That, coupled with 52 percent shooting in the second half, helped them pick up a nice win.
