It was a low scoring game between Alexandria and Detroit Lakes Tuesday night, but it was a big 37-29 win for the Cardinal girls’ basketball team, which avenged an earlier loss to Detroit Lakes.

“The Cardinals got a huge team win on senior night as we slugged it out with the Lakers,” said head coach Wendy Kohler. “We knew this was going to be a battle as the Lakers took the Fergus Otters to the wire on Saturday night.

“The Lakers sports a huge line-up and run a tough matchup zone, forcing us to execute with patience to break them down and [get] the looks we wanted.

“The Cardinal defense was relentless, as we were in attack mode from the opening tip and refused to give the Lakers any uncontested looks, both on the perimeter and in the paint,” said Kohler, whose team allowed the Lakers just 29 points. “The coaching staff was impressed with our hard-nosed mentality and our growth in many areas of the game, both individually and as a team.”

Karly Betterman used her quickness to get to the basket for 12 points to lead the Cardinals, with Emily Thul and Kalli Bowser adding six apiece.

“The depth of the team continues to grow and expand,” said the coach. “We kept bringing the fresh troops in to keep the pressure intense, and also gave us an answer when we faced foul trouble.”

The Cardinals also honored their three senior players, Jessica Syvrud, Dani Strater and Kalli Bowser, and their two senior managers, Sam Carver and Karla Thoennes.

Alexandria will now host a first round Section 8AAA playoff game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
