Girls' basketball: Minnewaska, West Central Area fall

Minnewaska trailed by 12 at the half to Melrose, and fell 55-51 in Tuesday’s girls’ basketball game.

Mady Phillips led the Lakers with 14 points, including three from three-point range, while Sydney Joos added 12. Joos also had 10 rebounds.

It was fouls that cost the Lakers, who hit 21 from the field, but committed 19 fouls and allowed the Dutchmen to score 14 of its points from the charity stripe.

Minnewaska will host Montevideo on Tuesday.

UNDERWOOD 52, WEST CENTRAL AREA 51

Rocket Kaitlyn Holen was fouled with 3.8 seconds remaining, and hit one of her two free throws to ice the game, breaking a 51-51 tie between Underwood and West Central Area.

“Last night’s game against Underwood was heartbreaking,” said West Central Area coach Beth Hanson. “We put a full game together and played very well, but just fell short 52-51.

“In the final minutes of the game, we had every opportunity we needed to take the game. The girls kept their heads in the game to the very end. We will continue to practice end-of-the-game situations.”

Christina Kruize, Holly VanKempen and Tiana Christenson each had 10 points for the Knights.

“I am really happy with how we competed and everyone elevated their level of play. We came out with a new mentality and were ready to execute our game plan,” said Hanson.

West Central Area now hosts Class A’s No. 10 ranked Upsala tonight, Friday, and will be at Osakis Tuesday.
