Girls' basketball: Osakis tops SJP, falls to Staples-Motley

The Osakis girls followed up their big win over Upsala earlier in the week with an easy win over St. John’s Prep on Thursday night.

The Silverstreaks took a 31-16 lead into the break against the Johnnies and ran away with things by outscoring SJP 35-11 in the second half. Annalise Savageau had a team-high 29 points and four assists. The junior guard hit seven threes on the night, including four in the second half. Eleven players scored in all for the Silverstreaks.

“After a big win for us on Monday night, a concern is always how we play the next game,” head coach Pat Kalpin said. “We want this team to carry the momentum over into each game, especially after big wins. I felt the girls did that tonight. It was a fun, solid win for the team.”

The first section loss of the season for the Osakis girls came at the hands of Staples-Motley on Tuesday night as the Cardinals beat the Streaks 59-42.

“Tough loss for the girls tonight,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “We ran into a real good Staples-Motley team. They do so many things well on both ends of the court.”

Osakis stuck with the Cardinals through part of the night before they hit three triples on three straight possessions.

“Good teams like that, we can’t have defensive breakdowns,” Kalpin said. “They’ll make you pay. The girls have been playing really well these past few weeks. We just need to take this game in stride and use it to make us a better basketball team.”

The win moved the Cardinals to 17-4 overall and dropped Osakis to 19-3 and to 10-1 against Section 6AA opponents.
