Alexandria avenged an earlier loss to Willmar Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Cardinals 43-38 after rallying from a 22-19 halftime deficit.
“The Willmar Cards got us on their home floor, and we were determined to grab a lock on the runner-up spot in the tough CLC league and set the record straight,” said Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler.
“Willmar ran a sagging man defense, forcing us to really lock in and execute the offense with good screens and efficient ball movement.
“It took us a while to adjust, but in the second half, we executed our sets and sprung our shooters free for excellent looks in which we cashed in,” Kohler added.
Alexandria was led by Amanda Christianson with 18 points, and Jess Syvrud added nine, Kalli Bowser seven, Dani Strater six, Sarah Bruzek two and Karly Betterman one.
“Lockdown defense, rebounding down the stretch, and cashing in at the line were key factors in securing the win,” said the coach. “Another area of huge growth was in the decision-making category.”
The Cardinals were 10 for 12 at the charity stripe in the second half.
Alexandria now holds second place in the Central Lakes Conference at 10-3. They will host St. Cloud Apollo tonight, Friday and will host Detroit lakes on Tuesday.
