WCA boys' basketball: Knights split against Tiger, Royals

West Central Area lost a halftime lead to Browerville after holding off Royalton over the weekend.

After holding Browerville to just seven first-half points, West Central Area couldn’t answer the Tigers in the second half as they rallied for a 43-38 win over the Knights.

“Our game plan was to minimize possessions,” said head coach Kraig Hunter. “We slowed the game down to 17 possessions in the first half and really had them out of rhythm by changing up defenses and making them have to guard us on offense.

“They simply hit the tough shots under pressure down the stretch when they needed baskets to win the game.”

Drew Peterson led the nights with 11 points and five rebounds, while Jay Zimmerman contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Kyle Petermeier had 21 points for the Tigers.

The West Central Area boys upped their record to 10-6 with a 53-47 win over Royalton on Saturday night.

The Knights led by 12 at the break and held on after a furious comeback attempt by the Royals. West Central Area led 44-27 with 2:12 left before the Royals scored 20 points the rest of the way.

“Royalton really tried to slow the game down against us,” Knights head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We were patient and executed pretty well, shooting 49 percent against their zone defense and held them to 27 points throughout most of the game. It was quite a flurry of threes for them at the end. Overall, we played real well together as a team.”
