Brandon-Evansville’s John Haseman reached a career milestone on Monday night but it came in another close loss for the Chargers as they fell to Bertha-Hewitt 52-48.

Haseman needed 18 points to reach 1,000 for his career coming into the night. Things didn’t look good at halftime as he had tallied just two, but he showed once again that he can score in bunches by putting up 20 in the second half.

“I’m really happy for him,” his head coach John Holsten said. “The thing about John is he’ll tell you that the 1,000 points belong to everybody. He’s a great kid, and he has great character. The other thing with him is when he gets on the court, he’s looking to improve every time. He’s unique in that way.”

It seemed like that memorable moment would come in a win before the Bears made enough plays down the stretch to close things out. The Chargers held a four-point lead in the second half but a couple of turnovers and 1-for-5 shooting from the free throw line down the stretch proved costly.

Brandon-Evansville shot just 18-of-49 from the field and 8-of-16 from the free throw line overall. The Bears weren’t much better from the field (16-of-39) but a 15-of-19 display from the stripe was the difference in the game.

Haseman finished with another double-double after adding 12 rebounds to his 22 points. Freshman Skyler Quinn got his first start in replace of James Huisman, who was out with an injured thumb. Quinn made the most of that opportunity with 15 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals.

“It was a way to develop some depth, that’s for sure,” Holsten said. “He gave us a spark and did some good things.”

The Chargers had a couple lapses that proved to be too much to overcome in the end. Brandon-Evansville jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three minutes but still had just eight points with almost three minutes left in the half. They trailed 18-13 at the half, and Haseman couldn’t quite dig them out of that hole in the second half.

The Chargers are in the midst of a five-game losing streak. That has dropped them to 6-12 overall and to 4-5 in the Little Eight Conference.

“I think we get a little tentative,” Holsten said. “Instead of being aggressive, we make mistakes because we’re not being aggressive. I think that’s hurting us more than anything else. They’re good kids. They work hard and they’re good basketball players. I know we’re better than this. We just need to be a bit more aggressive down the stretch.”

The Chargers will try to snap that losing streak tonight in Rothsay. They will then welcome in Osakis next Tuesday where Haseman will be recognized during a short pregame ceremony for reaching the 1,000-point milestone.
