The Brandon-Evansville girls got a section win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Monday night after closing out a 47-36 game.

The Chargers had let one slip away a few nights earlier in Battle Lake, but they made sure that didn’t happen against the Jaguars. The two teams were tied at 31 apiece with about eight minutes left. The Chargers finished things out on a 16-5 run behind four three pointers. Two of those came from Elizabeth Vinson, while Carlie Steffenson and Megan Kokett each added another.

“Those kids hit some big shots,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “We had to adjust a lot. They had two six footers inside, and they were insisting on pounding it into them. The second half, they got 14 offensive rebounds, and we were fortunate they missed a few bunnies. We executed down the stretch.”

The Chargers were 10-of-14 shooting from inside the arc and 14-of-27 overall. The Jaguars outrebounded them 39-31 and created 13 Brandon-Evansville turnovers, but the Chargers made enough plays down the stretch to move to 10-8 overall.

Megan Friedrich continued her stretch of strong play by putting in 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She was 7-for-7 from the free throw line, dished out three of her team’s 12 assists and added four steals.

“She’s really stepped it up,” Simpson said of Friedrich. “She’s been scoring pretty well. She rebounds. She had a nice game.”

Emma Friedrich has come a long way this season as well. The sophomore almost added a double-double herself with 13 points and nine rebounds. Vinson and Steffenson each added six points, while Kokett finished with three.

The Chargers had just one more game on the schedule this week. That came last night, Thursday, at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. Brandon-Evansville will return home next Thursday to play Battle Lake in Brandon.
