CLC Performers

of the week

Alexandria’s Logan Doyle and Justin Cumberbatch each were named CLC performers of the week in their respective sports.

Doyle earned the honor in boys’ basketball after his triple-double against St. Cloud Apollo last week. He finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 11 blocks against the Eagles. Cumberbatch earned the recognition in wrestling after winning the 220-pound weight class at the Big Ole Invite.

Kluver named Morehead City Marlins GM

Mitch Kluver of Alexandria has been named the general manager of the Morehead City Marlins baseball team in North Carolina.

He recently served as assistant general manager of the Alexandria Beetles, and served as general operations intern with the Fargo/Moorhead RedHawks.

Kluver graduated from Augsburg College with a degree in business management.

Elks hoop shoot winners

Alexandria Elks Lodge #1685 announced the top finishers from Alexandria at the Central District Hoop Shoot in Brainerd on January 26.

Annie Bowser took second in the 10-11-year-old girls’ division. Isiah Godfrey took third in the 10-11-year-old boys’ division. Shey Endes finished fifth in the 8-9-year-old boys’ division and Eli Simonson took fifth among the 12-13-year-old boys.

Ice Fishing Challenge February 9

The 13th annual Ice Fishing Challenge, sponsored by the Alexandria Sertoma Club, is set for Saturday, February 9, on Lake L’Homme Dieu.

Action will begin at noon, and this year, there will again be a top prize of $20,000.

Tickets for the Challenge are $35 and can be purchased online at www.icefishingchallenge.org or at Christopherson Bait, Sunnie’s (formerly Three Havens) and Elden’s Fresh Foods in Alexandria.

Golden Gloves boxing

The third Golden Gloves boxing card will be held at the Wadena Armory Saturday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. with 12 bouts scheduled.

Boxers from Wadena, Brainerd, Crosby, Willmar, Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud and Minneapolis will face off.

Runestone Spiel March 1-3

The 7th annual authentic Runestone Spiel will be held at the Runestone Communty Center Friday-Sunday, March 1-3.

There is a 16 team limit with four games guaranteed. Cost is $160 per team.

There will also be a 2+2 Fun Spiel on Saturday, March 2 for new/novice curlers.

Players may sign up individually and will be placed on a team.

Cost is $20 per person and there is an eight-team limit.

WCA elementary

basketball tournament

West Central Area will host an elementary basketball tournament on Saturday, March 23 for boys and girls in grades 4-6.

Cost is $100 per team.

Youth basketball night rescheduled

The Alexandria Youth Basketball Night has been rescheduled for Friday, March 1 during the Cardinal boys’ basketball game against Rocori at 7:30 p.m.

All youth basketball players wearing their youth basketball T-shirt or jersey will receive free admission to the game.

All players will also receive a team photo and varsity players will be signing autographs after the game. Cookie/coffee social will also follow the game in the hallway outside the gym.

Osakis softball camp

Osakis will host a softball tune-up camp presented by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth and the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph on Saturday-Sunday, March 2-3 at the Osakis High School.

There will be clinics for pitching, catching and skills as well as a coaches clinic.

The camp is open to girls in grades 7-12.

Deadline for registration is February 28, with registrations before February 20 receiving a camp T-shirt.

Cost for the pitching and catching sessions is $20 each, with the skills session costing $50. All three sessions can be attended for $60, and there is a $10 cost for the coaching session.

YMCA winter youth basketball events

The Alexandria Area YMC is offering a youth free throw contest on Saturday, February 9 at 1 p.m.

The contest is open to boys and girls 5th grade and older.

There will also be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 5 and older on Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to sign up as teams of three to five players.

YMCA classes

The Alexandria Area YMCA is offering beginning and advanced gymnastics classes beginning February 26 and running through April 9 for boys and girls ages 18 months and up.

The YMCA is also offering winter youth baseball and softball activities including an indoor hitting league beginning on March 17 for youth in grades 3-9. Teams of four will compete against each other.

There is a youth indoor pitching clinic on Sunday, March 3, at 6 p.m. for youth in grades 3-6 and includes four sessions to focus on the fundamentals of pitching.

Batting cages are open Fridays and Sundays, with Saturday batting cage times available beginning February 23.

Redbird competitive youth summer soccer registration

Registration for players interested in Alexandria Area Soccer Association Summer Youth Soccer opened on January 24, with the U11-U19 registration deadline March 1 and the U10 registration deadline April 1.

Polar Plunge registration

Registration is now open for the 2013 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.

The funds raised benefit more than 7,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes.

The Alexandria Plunge will be held at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.

The Plunge begins at 1 p.m. on February 24. Check-in will be at the Plunge site.

LAR 35-older open gym

Lakes Area Recreation holds open gym on Sundays for 35-older from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym, running to the middle of April.

Cost is $3 for adults.

Montevideo youth basketball tournament

There will be a youth basketball tournament in Montevideo for boys and girls in grades 5-7 on Saturday, March 23.
