Alex boys' hockey: Third period dooms Cards against Otters

The Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team extended a tough stretch of play for Alexandria on Tuesday night as the Otters scored three in the third to win 4-2 at the Runestone Community Center.
Tom Schmidt scored both of Alexandria’s goals with the first one tying the game at one apiece early in the second period. His second of the night gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead at 8:41 in the third period.
The Otters controlled the game from that point on. Casey Ward scored less than a minute after Schmidt’s goal to tie the game. Kyler Peterson made it 3-2 at 14:27 before Sam Rausch added an empty-netter with 17 seconds left.
“The effort in the third period was there again like it has been many games,” head coach Scott Woods said. “Unfortunately, even though we outshot the opposing team in the third, we gave up a few goals and weren’t able to get enough goals into their net.”
Ben Allen stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced for Alexandria. Ian Bjorgum got the win for Fergus Falls behind 26 saves.
The Cardinals were set to welcome in River Lakes last night, Thursday, before Sauk Rapids-Rice comes to town next Monday.
