Alex girls' hockey: Alex squeezes 4-3 win from Spuds

It was a back-and-forth contest for the Cardinal girls’ hockey team Tuesday at Moorhead, as the two squads traded the lead until late in the third when Shelby Iverson scored the game-winner with 13:18 on the clock, giving Alexandria a 4-3 victory.

Alexandria, which finished with a perfect record against Section 6A opponents, opens tournament action next week.

McKenzie Revering opened the scoring for Alexandria with a power play goal off a Shaneé Herd pass just three and a half minutes into the game, but Moorhead took advantage of its own power play opportunity before the end of the period.

The Spuds took the lead early in the second, but Becca Illies neutralized that score with a goal late in the period off an assist from Herd.

Revering picked up her second goal of the game early in the third period to give Alexandria the lead. That goal came on a pass from Anna Carlsen during a power play opportunity.

Moorhead made the going tough as the Spuds scored at 8:26 to tie the game once again before Iverson, on assists by Hanah Hansen and Melissa Drown, put the Cardinals ahead for good with 13:18 on the scoreboard.

Amy Jost picked up the win in goal as she made 31 saves.
