A 3-1 win over Fargo South Friday night left the Cardinal girls with a 16-6-2 overall record with one game remaining before the start of the Section 6A girls’ hockey playoffs slated to begin this week.

Shelby Iverson scored the only goal of the first period with two minutes remaining off a pass from Becca Illies, but Fargo South tied the game in the second period.

“At the break, the teams were deadlocked in a defensive battle with a goal and 14 shots apiece,” said head coach Andy Shriver. “In the final stanza, Melissa Drown put the Cards up with a strong play to the net off a feed from Hanah Hansen.

“South applied pressure and ultimately pulled the goalie, setting up the icing on the cake by Becca Illies, [who took] a breakout pass from Shelby, getting over the red-line and closing out the scoring at 3-1 on the empty net.”

Amy Jost made 23 saves in goal for the win.

Alexandria was to have played Moorhead last night, Tuesday. The section quarterfinals begin on Saturday. Section seeding had not been released by the time this issue went to press.
