Alex dance: Cards 8th, 9th at Section 4AA tournament

The Alexandria dance team had its season come to an end at the Section 4AA meet in Sartell on Saturday.

The Alexandria dance team had its season come to an end at the Section 4AA meet in Sartell on Saturday.

The Cardinals had what head coach Christine Reilly called their best performances of the season. That still wasn’t quite enough as Alexandria finished eighth in the kick competition and ninth in jazz out of 14 teams.

“The girls did so many things right on Saturday,” Reilly said. “With the exception of two mistakes, it was everything we hoped for. Scores were tight between sixth through eighth place, a mere 12 point spread out of a possible 700 points.”

The top three teams in each division moved on to compete at the state tournament. Sartell, St. Cloud Cathedral and Rocori were the teams that accomplished that feat in both kick and jazz competitions.

“In a judged sport such as dance team, it is often hard to have concrete answers as to why you were given a certain score,” Reilly said. “In my opinion, it is an imperfect system that still needs improvement. What the team has to remember is their performances and how they felt during and after them.

“The girls have so much to be proud of. In my ninth year of coaching in Alexandria, I can say with confidence that this is the strongest team we have ever had. That may not be evident on paper, but I know it and the team knows it.”
