Wrestling: Osakis' Coyers have pinning combination

The two Silverstreak wrestlers provide a powerful start to every Osakis match

While neither Brendon Coyer, a freshman, or Trenton Coyer, a sophomore, tip the scales at much more than 100 pounds soaking wet, don’t let that fool you. This is one powerful pair of wrestlers.

The Coyer brothers are the first two wrestlers on the mat for Osakis each and every match as Brendon holds down the 106-pound weight class for the Silverstreaks and Trenton has laid claim to the 113-pound spot.

And although they are young, they certainly have earned those spots.

Brendon has racked up 23 wins this season against just two losses, and 18 of those victories have come by pin.

Trenton has 24 wins and no losses this year, earning 10 pins and five victories by forfeit – all good for six points apiece.

That dominance in the early weights has earned Brendon the No. 2 ranking at his weight class in the Class A polls, while Trenton stands in the No. 10 spots in the most recent rankings.

They didn’t let up last Thursday, either, as both wrestlers earned pins to lead the Silverstreak team, now among the Lean and Mean rankings in Class A, to a 57-22 win over West Central Area-Ashby/Evansville.

Ryan Engfer, 113 pounds, kept the ball rolling as he earned a win by decision, and Garret Sunder, 132 pounds, came away with a 2:19 pin and Austin Rollag added a 1:27 pin at 152 pounds.

At 170 pounds, Brandon Spanswick picked up a pin in 1:45, and at 182, Nils Hagen added his own pin in 1:05 and Garret Sunder, 195 pounds, claimed the fastest pin of the night in 26 seconds.

Another state-ranked wrestler, Garret Scherr, earned a pin at 220 pounds in 28 seconds, and at 285 pounds, Peter Hagen finished off the Knights with a pin in 1:03.

Scherr is ranked No. 2 in his weight class at that weight, and both he and Brendon Coyer moved up from the No. 3 spot over the previous state poll.

Osakis will be at the Kimball triangular tomorrow, Thursday, and will then be at the New York Mills Invitational on Saturday before getting ready for the Prairie Conference dual meet championship between the Prairie North and Prairie South champions on Thursday, February 7.
