Boys' basketball: Osakis, Minnewaska boys to meet at Target Center tomorrow

By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press

The Osakis boys’ basketball team will take advantage of an opportunity to play at the Target Center in Minneapolis this Saturday when the Silverstreaks meet up with Minnewaska.

Lakers’ head coach Todd Beecher contacted Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher to talk about the possibility of moving the game to the NBA venue. Hoelscher said every high school coach receives an e-mail from the Timberwolves organization about the possibility of playing a game there.

Both coaches are in the early stages of building their programs as first-year head coaches. The Silverstreaks are currently 1-14 and the Lakers are 5-10, but both coaches are enthusiastic about trying to turn their programs into winners. An opportunity to play a game at the Target Center and catch a Timberwolves game afterwards can be a part of that process.

“I thought this would be a great time to get some excitement in our program by playing on that court,” Hoelscher said. “We get to watch the T-wolves afterwards, too. Most of our guys have never been to a T-wolves game, so this will be a great experience for them and a good team building day.”

The two teams will tip off at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Timberwolves game against New Orleans will tip at around 7 that night.
