The win pushed the Cardinals into first place in the CLC

Shelby Iverson had only one goal in the Cardinals’ game against the St. Cloud Icebreakers, but she made it count as she used passes from Anna Carlsen and McKenzie Revering to fire the puck past goalie Lucy Gaetz and break a 3-3 tie, giving Alexandria a 4-3 Central Lakes Conference win Tuesday night.

That win moved the Cards into first place in the conference standings on points, having played one more game that Sartell/Sauk Rapids-Rice. Alexandria is 9-1-2 in CLC play, while Sartell/SRR is 9-1-1.

Alexandria had an early lead, scoring the only goal of the first period as Becca Illies scored three minutes in off a pass from Iverson.

The Icebreakers responded with a pair of goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cardinals didn’t have to go into the third period down a goal.

“It looked like the Cards would have to do some soul searching between periods,” said head coach Andy Shriver, “but instead the players took charge on the spot.

“Two dominant shifts later, Revering carved a shot off an aggressive pinch that found the corner with 14 seconds left, [with] Taylor Ellingson assisting.”

In the third, it was Alexandria’s turn to go ahead once again, this time on an unassisted goal by Madi Houska just 50 seconds into the period, but Tatum Peterson tied the game again as she scored late in the period.

It was at the 15:16 mark that Iverson picked up her goal to give the Cards the victory.

Bailey Serum got the win in goal as she stopped 27 shots by the Icebreakers. St. Cloud’s goalie also made 27 saves.

The Cardinals will host Fargo South tonight, Friday, and will be at Moorhead on Monday.
