Farm update session will examine 2013

Regional farmers often wonder how to defend their land base, reduce financial risk and hold onto land they’ve always rented. Other concerns for 2013 are how much it will cost to produce the next crop, how much grain to pre-harvest sell and when to sell old crops.

A farm management and marketing update session will be held on Thursday, February 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Backroads Steakhouse in Evansville.

Developed by University of Minnesota Extension educators Bret Oelke and Bill Craig, it will address current agricultural challenges and offer strategies for use in planning the 2013 crops.

The update session will consist of:

• Crop production cost projections for 2013.

• Crop profitability, which crops look profitable in 2013.

• Crop insurance update.

• Marketing strategies for the 2012 and 2013 crops.

• Calculating machinery costs, the real cost of owning machinery.

• Defending land bases, how much farmers can afford to lose.
