Letter - Wildlife and song birds need food
Please do what you can; the gift will come next spring when you see those hatchlings following the mother hen.
To the editor:
On January 19, a day before this numbing cold, I witnessed an elderly man with a distinct limp struggling with a 50-pound bag of corn that he planned to spread out for wild turkeys. I stopped to check last night, January 21, to see how much corn remained, and it was gone to the last kernel. The area was completely covered with turkey tracks.
I say this just as a reminder that temperatures not getting above zero during the day and reaching 45 below wind chills at night are absolutely deadly for wildlife and our song birds. I realize that bird seed is expensive and corn is $9 for 50 pounds and prohibitive for many families.
