Alexandria dance: Cardinals second, third

Alexandria now heads to section

In their final home meet of the season, the Cardinal dance team finished second in kick and third in jazz Friday night.

“The team was very excited and confident,” said head coach Christine Reilly. “Unfortunately, it turned out not to be their best performance in kick.

“They started off strong, but one mistake seemed to lead to another, and it was just too many to beat out St. Cloud Apollo.

“The team knew what was happening during the performance, and gave their best effort to keep the energy level high despite mistakes,” she said. “The Cards have placed ahead of St. Cloud Apollo at CLC meets and invites over the past month, so it was a disappointing loss. Apollo beat us by eight points out of a possible 400, so it was tight, but we should have had a significant lead.”

Detroit Lakes was third in the kick division and Fergus Falls finished fourth.

In the jazz division, Detroit Lakes finished first, St. Cloud Apollo second and Alexandria third, with Fergus Falls finishing fourth.

“The team had a good performance in jazz,” said Reilly. “Scores remained tight between Alex and Apollo, but we have yet to beat them this season in jazz. We always fall just a little short. Friday night, we were 10 points behind Apollo.”

In addition to being the final home competition of the season, the Cards celebrated Parents Night and Senior Night, honoring the lone senior, Madison Groettum.

“Madison is a five-year member and has served as a team captain over the last two years,” said her coach. “Her leadership, dedication and enthusiasm will be greatly missed next year.”

The Cards will now head to section competition on Saturday, February 2 at Sartell.
