Maybe it was the cold temperatures, but the Cardinal girls’ basketball team had a hard time getting started Thursday night, but after getting their game warmed up, cruised to a 61-43 win over Sartell in Central Lakes Conference play.
“The Cards started out slow last night against the Sabres as they took an early 11-2 lead, but slowly made the adjustments necessary to settle down and pull away for a solid team victory on the home court,” said head coach Wendy Kohler.
“Our defense was flying and we also took control of the boards after the first few minutes.”
Alexandria led 27-13 at the half, then poured in 34 in the second half for the win.
“Teamwork and defense was key as we frustrated the Sabres, making them work hard on each possession to score,” said Kohler. “Sartell features some solid guard play and an excellent coaching staff, so we knew we needed to clamp down.”
Amanda Christianson, Karly Betterman and Kalli Bowser were all in double figures with 18, 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Amanda Gould added six, Sarah Bruzek five, Jess Syvrud three, Emily Thul two, Macy Hatlestad two and Kendall Kohler two.
The Cards were at Brainerd last night, Tuesday, and will be at Sauk Rapids-Rice on Friday.
