Famous bean soup to be served
Whatever uncertainties may exist in the Senate, one thing is sure: bean soup is on the menu of the Senate restaurant every day.

Knute Nelson, a long-time resident of Alexandria who served Minnesota as governor and as U.S. Senator, is said to have requested that the soup be added to the Senate menu. The original recipe is still served in the restaurant today.
The Douglas County Historical Society (DCHS) will serve its annual “Bean Soup Lunch with Knute” on Tuesday, February 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Nelson Gables Governor’s Room in Alexandria.
Menu includes bean soup, salad, roll, cookie, coffee and water. Tickets are $9 in advance and $10 at the door and may be purchased at DCHS or from DCHS board members.
Proceeds will be combined with a grant from the Arts Cultural Heritage Fund, administered by the Minnesota Historical Society and other donations to purchase a microfilm reader and software for the research library.
