Boys' basketball: West Central Area holds off Ashby
The West Central Area boys’ basketball team held off an Ashby run in the second half to come away with a 60-51 win on Monday night.
The Knights led 26-23 at the half and extended that lead to nine points right out of the break. The Arrows responded with a couple three pointers from Morgan Wing that helped them climb all the way back to tie it at 44 apiece.
West Central Area never trailed again after an Austin Redepenning three broke that tie. The Knights went on to score 34 points in the half as they held off a good Ashby team to pick up the win.
“I didn’t think either team played that sharp, which is maybe due to a Monday game or maybe since it was our fourth game in seven days,” WCA head coach Kraig Hunter said. “But I am proud of our kids finding a way to grind out a win after this long week against a team with a very good record. We really responded every time there was pressure in this game.”
Dakotah Kashmark led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds. Brady Combs added 10 points and five boards, while Redepenning had 10 points and two assists.
Tanner Langlie helped keep Ashby in the game with 15 points and seven rebounds. Wing scored all 10 of his points in the second half, while J.P. Moe and Blake Ohren finished with 12 and nine points, respectively.
“I thought our defense was decent much of the game,” Ashby head coach Jeremy Knick said. “But we need to be able to rely on more guys to get into the rotation. We also had way too many empty offensive possessions. There were too many breakdowns at times. On offense, we never really got into any rhythm.”
