Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville hands Battlers first conference loss

The Brandon-Evansville boys got their most impressive win of the season last Friday, not only by who they beat but by how they beat them.
The Chargers (6-7, 4-2 LEC) were trailing a 10-2 Battle Lake team 40-22 at the half before storming back for a 53-50 win. Brandon-Evansville’s defense held the Battlers to 29 percent shooting for the game, including an impressive showing in the second half where the Chargers held them to just 10 points.
“Everything turned,” Brandon-Evansville head coach John Holsten said. “We shot the ball better, going from 31 percent in the first half to 59 percent in the second half. We went from 12 turnovers in the first half to just three in the second, and we limited them to one shot most of the time in the second half.”
John Haseman had one of his best nights of the season to lead the way. The dominant senior post finished with 30 points and 20 rebounds. Twenty-one of those points came in the second half. He was instrumental in helping the Chargers dominate on the glass, where they out-rebounded the Battlers 41-24.
Haseman also got a lot of help in the comeback. Blake Satterlie added eight points and seven rebounds. Pat Schaffer poured in eight points and seven assists, five of which came after halftime, and James Huisman had four important offensive rebounds and finished with five points and eight boards.
“It was really a nice win because everybody was involved,” Holsten said. “Everybody made big plays down the stretch, and we just kind of hung in there. I think it showed the kids that they can play good ball. I think that’s important for them to know. Their coaches knew that for a long time, and I think they all know now that they can play with good teams.”
The Chargers will have a chance to build on that momentum with one game this week. They will be at Parkers Prairie on Friday night to face a 2-10 Panthers team.
