The following is a collection of stories and other items that were included in Alexandria newspapers over the years.

100 YEARS AGO

JANUARY 1913

The Commercial Club proposed regulations for saloons: A limit of four saloon licenses with annual fees set at $1,000; hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; no partitions, screens, blinds, stalls or booths; no food sold or given away; no musical instruments; no cleaning on Sundays. No license will be issued to anyone connected to a licensed brewery… M. Kraemer, in a letter about saloons to the editor, stated that “tables and chairs should be allowed so people can take their stimulants in a comfortable way, and not have to hang onto the bar until they are ready to head out”… The Commercial Club held 17 meetings in 1912. Their biggest accomplishment was the potato warehouse. Accounting books showed expenditures of $300 for clearing channels and $400 to establish the County Fair.

50 YEARS AGO

JANUARY 1963

What might be the largest lawsuit settlement in Douglas County history was settled out of court when the defendants sued by the school district in the Jefferson High School heating system case agreed to pay the district $41,000… The Minnesota Twins Baseball Banquet scheduled as a stag event next week has been opened to the ladies because of the demands of indignant women who claim they are just as interested in baseball as the menfolk… Leslie Suprey, a Soo Line Railroad telegrapher for 18 years, has compiled a pictorial history of the Soo Line’s golden era of steam titled Steam Trains of the Soo. He is the third generation of telegraphers. His grandfather, Ted Suprey, served at Forada, and his father, Grant, is in Isle, Minnesota.

25 YEARS AGO

JANUARY 1988

Irate Osakis citizens nicknamed the structure “Pollard’s Palace” in 1970, and took the first opportunity to vote out Mayor Ed Pollard and other councilmen who spent $150,000 of their money for a community center. This week, they stood up and admitted Pollard’s dream was a vision of foresight and betterment for the community. As a reward, the building will be called Edward Pollard Community Hall… Minnesota Twins fans crowded Arrowwood Resort to see Kirby Puckett and Dan Gladden at a promotional appearance… Pictured was 3-year-old Matt Ruttenon, ice fishing with his grandpa, Arden Dempewolf, after temperatures soared to 40 degrees above zero… With a score of 1,534, Susan Meyer Brede emerged as the leading woman bowler in the 79th Peterson Bowling Classic Roll-off in Chicago.

10 YEARS AGO

JANUARY 2003

A plan to improve 50th Avenue to clear the way for future development has been put on hold. The developers who own the land requested the delay because they did not want to pay the assessments the city was proposing… Alexandria Beetles signed four players for the third season of the Northwood’s League. This includes Alexandria native Mark Craigmile, a pitcher at Southwest State University who has been with the team since 2001. He earned All-Northwoods League honors with a 4-3 record last season… A group of about 20 people gathered outside Alexandria City Hall last Friday to protest the possibility of military action against Iraq.
