The 2013 Community Read, One Community, One Book, will feature a series of presentations on The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. The presentations are free and open to the public.
This detective novel follows San Francisco Private Investigator Sam Spade and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.
The Community Read strives to bring the community together to read, discuss and celebrate books and writers. It is a collaboration of Douglas County Library, Friends of the Library, Cherry Street Books and Alexandria Community Education, all in Alexandria.
Some copies of the book will be available at the Friends of the Library Bookstore located in the Douglas County Library.
COMMUNITY READ EVENTS:
Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m., Douglas County Library meeting room in Alexandria – Brook Miller, associate professor of English from the University of Minnesota, Morris, will discuss The Maltese Falcon and author Dashiell Hammett.
Wednesday, February 6 at 6 p.m., Grand Arbor in Alexandria – Mikko Cowdery will lead an open book discussion of The Maltese Falcon.
Thursday, February 7 at 7 p.m., Douglas County Library meeting room – Join crime writers Carl Brookins, Ellen Hart and William Kent Krueger to discuss their work, the crime genre, The Maltese Falcon and writing in general.
Friday, February 8 at 7 p.m., Lakes Area Theatre in Alexandria – Hear a local live radio mystery performance of The Maltese Falcon. This performance will be broadcast on 10 radio stations the weekend of March 1-3.
Monday, February 11 at 6 p.m., Grand Arbor Theatre in Alexandria – The movie The Maltese Falcon will show. After the movie, discussion will be led by Mikko Cowdery.
Thursday, February 14 at 7 p.m., Douglas County Library meeting room – Watch a free showing of the movie The Maltese Falcon, starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor.
Saturday, February 16 at 1 p.m., Alexandria Technical and Community College gymnasium in Alexandria – University of Minnesota Raptor Center will exhibit birds of prey such as a falcon, owl, hawk and eagle. This is made possible in part with a Legacy Grant.
Thursday, February 21 at 7 p.m., Douglas County Library meeting room – Hear about past mysteries that helped shape Douglas County, with Historian Rachel Barduson.
Monday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m., Douglas County Library meeting room – Book discussion on The Maltese Falcon.
