Elden’s caught the eye of Grocery Headquarters’ editors because of its remodel, which added 22,000 square feet to the building. This doubled the size of some departments, such as produce and frozen, and added new ones, including Elden’s Downtown Floral.

The undertaking involved switching the direction of the store’s aisles from east-to-west to north-to-south, adding refrigerated cases in produce and skylights in the new section to cut down on energy consumption, and a re-grading of the parking lot.

Elden’s was also honored because of its community ties and dedication to local schools, including its Register Tapes for Education and Athletes Bagging Groceries programs.

“Many stores undertake remodels, but Elden’s stayed open 24 hours a day throughout, and the result is a dramatic transformation that will allow them to better compete with Walmart and the other stores in town,” said Richard Turcsik, executive editor.

Based in New York, Grocery Headquarters is a division of Macfadden Communications. The full article can be read at www.groceryheadquarters.com.
