BRANDON-EVANSVILLE 65, ORTONVILLE

Megan Kokett’s career night led the Brandon-Evansville girls to a 65-55 win over Ortonville on Monday night as the Chargers won their sixth straight game.

Kokett didn’t miss from inside the arc. She finished with 27 points, paced by 7-of-7 shooting from two. The junior also hit three triples and got herself a lot of easy buckets in transition after finishing with nine of her team’s 17 steals.

“She had a good night,” head coach Dick Simpson said.

It was a season high in points for any Chargers player this winter. Kokett’s triple at the end of the first half gave her team a 40-27 lead. Ortonville battled back within single digits in the second half, but Brandon-Evansville was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Megan Friedrich had a nice night of her own with 17 points and nine rebounds. Emma Friedrich added six points and 12 rebounds as well.

The Chargers shot just 37 percent overall, but got to the free throw line 24 times. They connected on 16 of those, led by Mariah Hansen, who went 6-for-6 from the stripe.

Brandon-Evansville had to put its six-game winning streak to the test against the top team in the Little Eight Conference last night, Thursday. Parkers Prairie was in Brandon with a 13-0 record before the Chargers go on the road to face an 8-2 Underwood team next Tuesday.

KNIGHT GIRLS SPLIT

The West Central Area girls split their last two games, falling to Morris 62-42 on Monday before taking care of St. John’s Prep 50-42 on Tuesday.

Holly Van Kempen had a double-double against the Johnnies to help her team overcome a 29-25 deficit at the break. She finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Tiana Christenson added 10 points, five rebounds and four steals and Christina Kruize finished with nine points and four rebounds.

“This game was a nice win for us and a big conference game,” head coach Beth Hanson said. “We started out very slow. We were letting them set the pace of the game and could not get an offense together. The second half was better. We started seeing grey areas in their press and found each other on our passes. There were improvements made in the second half, yet we still have things we can improve on.”

It was the second half that proved to be the Knights’ undoing against Morris. West Central Area trailed by just one at the break, but the Tigers outscored the Knights 33-12 after halftime.

“We didn’t come out of the locker room,” Hanson said. “We threw the ball away and ended up with 30 turnovers, many unforced. It is very hard to win games and compete when we take away our own opportunities to score.”
