CLC performers

of the week

Alexandria’s Shelby Iverson, Tom Schmidt and Logan Doyle were named the Central Lakes Conference performers of the week in their respective sports.

Iverson, a senior, was named in girls’ hockey after scoring two goals and adding one assist in a win over River Lakes.

Schmidt, a senior, had three goals and three assists in the Cardinal boys’ hockey team’s two wins over St. Cloud Tech and River Lakes.

Doyle, a senior, had 12 rebounds and four assists in one game for the Cardinal boys’ basketball team.

Cards ranked

The Cardinal boys’ swimming and diving team was ranked No. 5 in the State Class A dual meet polls recently, and the girls’ hockey team was ranked No. 18 in the latest Class A poll.

Hemingway earns first career college shutout

Alexandria native Matt Hemingway, goalie for Hamline University, earned his first college career hockey shutout January 11 as he stopped a formidable 33 shots to upset first place St. Thomas 1-0 in overtime.

This was the first win of the season for the Pipers, who are coached by former Alexandria Blizzard coach Doc DelCastillo.

Hemingway also made 22 saves and allowed just two goals in a 3-0 loss the following night, with the third goal coming on an empty net opportunity.

Twins Caravan

coming to Alexandria

The Minnesota Twins Winter Caravan Tour will be making another stop in Alexandria this winter when it comes to town on January 21.

The tour will be at the Viking Plaza Mall from 10-11 a.m. next Monday where fans will get the chance to meet pitchers Glen Perkins and Scott Diamond. Twins legend Tony Oliva and radio voice Cory Provus will also be on hand.

Girls’ hockey chili and burger feed fundraiser

The Alexandria girls’ hockey team will hold a chili and burger feed and silent auction on Friday, January 18 from 5-8 p.m. at the Alexandria Eagles Club.

Cost is $8 per ticket for adults, with tickets for children younger than 12 at $5, and children ages 4 and younger are free.

Tickets are available at the door or by contacting a Cardinal girls’ hockey player.

Team Extreme Ice

Fishing tournaments

Team Extreme Ice Fishing action will continue on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood on January 27, followed by Pelican Lake in Monticello on February 27, Clearwater Lake in St. Cloud on March 3, Round Lake in Brainerd on March 31 and Mille Lacs Lake in Garrison on April 7.

This is a team event with two anglers per team, with eight crappies and eight sunfish allowed to be weighed in. In the Mille Lacs Lake event, the limit will be 15 perch.

Action will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is a limit of 75 teams.

Polar Plunge

Registration is now open for the 2013 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.

The funds raised benefit more than 7,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes.

The Alexandria Plunge will be held at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.

The Plunge begins at 1 p.m. on February 24. Check-in will be at the Plunge site.

LAR 35-older open gym

Lakes Area Recreation holds open gym on Sundays for 35-older from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym, running to the middle of April.

Cost is $3 for adults.

Tiny Dribblers basketball program at LAR

Lakes Area Recreation will hold the Tiny Dribblers program for boys and girls in kindergarten as an introduction to the game of basketball.

The program will meet seven times at the Lincoln Elementary gym on Saturdays beginning on January 5 and running through February 16. Boys will meet from 9-9:45 a.m. and the girls will meet from 10-10:45 a.m.

Cost is $32 and includes a T-shirt.

Montevideo youth basketball tournament

There will be a youth basketball tournament in Montevideo for boys and girls in grades 5-7 on Saturday, March 23.

Entry deadline is March 8.
