Carlsen is Minnesota Hockey essay finalist

Karina Carlsen of Alexandria is one of three finalists in Minnesota Hockey’s Hockey Education Program (HEP) essay contest.

The 14U player in the Alexandria Area Hockey Association had her essay selected from a wide field of entries. The essay was based on the completion of the sentence, “I love to play hockey because . . .,” and all entries were voted on by a panel of judges, who selected the three finalists.

The three final essays will be featured on Fox Sports North during the 2013 broadcast of Hockey Day Minnesota on January 19, with the winner randomly drawn. That winner will have a dream day with their teammates at the Xcel Energy Center.

In addition, all three finalists will have the opportunity to attend a Minnesota Wild hockey game.

Below is the complete essay by Carlsen:

Why do I love hockey? I love stepping onto the ice for each practice/game, knowing that I can forget about everything for a little while. Having a couple hours each day to get away from the world, having time to focus on yourself, to work towards getting better. Going to the rink every day for five months makes it like a second home. The comforting feeling knowing that everyone is there for the same reason, because they love the game. Since the rink is like my second home, my team becomes like a family. Being in hockey has taught me so many things: commitment, hard work, determination, drive, and striving to get better. I have learned that in hockey it’s so important to work as a team, but you need to get better as an individual player too. Working on the off season can be tough, but it’s so worth it. Knowing I am so glad that I started this sport at age 7 and am still playing seven years later. Hockey has taught me so much, including teamwork, and other life skills. Hockey is more than a game, it’s a lifestyle, and I love it.
